Social Security Registration

Social Security Registration

Registration gives you a social security number (número de afiliación) and records your contribution status. Employees are normally registered by their employer, autónomos register themselves under RETA before starting activity, and people posted from another EU country register on the basis of an A1 certificate.

Common questions

Do I need a NIE before registering with social security?

In most cases yes. The NIE identifies you in the system and is requested on the registration forms. Some offices will process an application alongside a NIE appointment, but the usual order is NIE first.

My employer says they will register me. Do I need to do anything?

Employers handle the alta, but you still need a social security number of your own if you have never had one. Ask your employer which of the two they are doing before your start date.

Can a provider register me without a power of attorney?

A gestor or lawyer needs written authorisation to act on your behalf. Providers on EnterSpain send you the authorisation form as part of their onboarding, and will tell you if a notarised power of attorney is needed.

What is different for posted workers from another EU country?

If you hold an A1 certificate you usually keep contributing in your home country for the duration of the posting. You may still need a Spanish social security number for other procedures, which is a different request.
