When to Register Your Vehicle

You must register your vehicle in Spain if:

  • You become a Spanish resident (within 6 months)
  • Your vehicle stays in Spain over 6 months
  • You buy a vehicle in Spain
  • You import a vehicle from another country

EU residents can drive with EU plates for 6 months after becoming resident. Non-EU vehicles must be registered immediately.

Importing a Vehicle to Spain

Importing from EU countries:

  • No customs duties
  • Must pay registration tax (Impuesto de Matriculación): 0-14.75% based on CO2 emissions
  • Simpler process than non-EU imports

Importing from non-EU countries:

  • Pay customs duties: 10% of vehicle value
  • Pay VAT: 21% of value + duties
  • Pay registration tax: 0-14.75%
  • More complex, expensive process

Required Documents

To register a vehicle in Spain, you need:

  • Vehicle documents:
    • Original registration certificate
    • Technical inspection certificate (ITV equivalent)
    • Certificate of conformity (COC)
  • Personal documents:
    • NIE and residence permit
    • Passport
    • Proof of address (Empadronamiento)

Registration Process

Steps to register your vehicle:

  1. Get Spanish car insurance

Spanish License Plates

Spanish plate format:
