Resident vs non-resident accounts
Resident accounts assume you are tax-resident or living in Spain with a stable address; you will usually provide NIE, padrón, and proof of income or employment. Non-resident accounts exist for people without Spanish residence — they can carry higher fees and stricter review.
If you become resident later, ask the bank to reclassify the account and update your tax status — this affects reporting (e.g. CRS) and product eligibility.
Typical documents
- Valid passport or national ID.
- NIE or residence card (TIE / EU certificate).
- Certificado de empadronamiento (often requested).
- Proof of employment, self-employment, or income.
- Spanish mobile number and email.

Fees and bundled products
Many accounts are “free” only if you salary is domiciled or you maintain minimum balances. Watch for debit card, transfer, and ATM fees (especially non-network ATMs). Insurance or investment bundles are common upsells — you can usually decline.
IBAN and everyday payments
Your Spanish account has an IBAN starting with ES. Salary, rent, utilities, and taxes are usually paid by SEPA transfer or direct debit (domiciliación). For international transfers, compare rates between your bank and specialist providers such as Wise or Revolut.
Practical tips
- Open early — landlords and employers often need a local IBAN.
- Enable strong customer authentication for mobile banking (EU PSD2 rules).
- Keep PDF statements — you may need them for mortgages or Beckham filings.
