Childcare & guarderías (0–6)

Public plazas, private nurseries, ratios, and what to budget before school age.

Main options

Public early-years centres (escuela infantil de primer ciclo, 0–3) — Heavily subsidised; demand often exceeds supply. Priority rules usually include siblings, income, single-parent families, and distance to the centre. Your padrón in the municipality is usually required.

Private guarderías — Full cost, shorter waiting lists in many cities; offer flexible hours and sometimes English or other languages.

Second cycle (3–6) — Often integrated with the school you choose for primary; smoother transition if you align both.

Costs & subsidies

Fees for private care vary widely (roughly hundreds of euros per month depending on city and hours). Some regions publish income-based fee scales for public places. Ask about meal plans, summer camps, and registration fees up front.

How to apply

Deadlines are usually published by each ayuntamiento or regional education portal. Prepare ID for parents and children, padrón, work certificates, and vaccination records. Start early in large cities — queues are common.
