Exchanging your driving licence for a Spanish one

Optional for many EU residents — but useful for insurance, hiring, and long-term simplicity. Non-EU rules depend on bilateral agreements and residence duration.

Do you have to exchange?

Many newcomers can drive on a valid foreign licence for a period after becoming resident. Exchange is not always mandatory immediately — but insurers, employers, and rental companies sometimes prefer a Spanish licence. Deadlines and recognition rules change; always verify current DGT guidance for your nationality and licence type.

EU / EEA licences

EU/EEA licences are generally recognised while valid. After you are habitually resident in Spain, policy may require you to exchange or renew in line with Spanish rules. Exchanging is usually straightforward: residence proof, ID/NIE, padrón, photos, and a medical/psychotechnical report from an authorised centre.

UK and other non-EU licences

Rules for UK and other third-country licences depend on treaties, reciprocity, and whether you obtained residence before or after specific cut-off dates. Some paths require theory and practical tests if exchange is not available. Check the DGT country list — do not rely on forum posts alone.

Time-sensitive. If an exchange window applies, missing it can mean sitting a full Spanish driving test.

Typical exchange steps

  1. Confirm eligibility on the DGT website for your country.
  2. Obtain the medical certificate (authorised centre).
  3. Book an appointment at DGT or submit online where available.
  4. Pay the fee and hand in your old licence (you receive a Spanish replacement).

Backlogs vary by province — start the medical report and appointment early.

Medical / psychotechnical test

Spanish law requires periodic fitness checks for drivers. For exchange, you visit a Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores authorised by the DGT. The test is quick (vision, reaction, health questionnaire) and you receive a certificate for your application.
